Primecare™ Blood Separation Membranes
Blood separation membranes are essential components in diagnostic assays, enabling the efficient separation and isolation of plasma from whole blood samples.
At Fortis, we provide Poly-ether Sulfone (PES) Asymmetric Red Blood Cell Separation Membranes under our Primecare brand. These membranes are designed to rapidly separate red blood cells from plasma while facilitating plasma collection.
Our Primecare Membranes are asymmetric in structure, where blood enters through a surface with larger pores or openings (See below image). As the blood passes through the membrane, the red blood cells (RBCs) are trapped as they move progressively through smaller and smaller pores, while the resulting plasma exits from the other side of the membrane.
Primecare™ Asymmetric Membranes
Our membranes can be tailored to various specifications including thickness and final pore size to meet the diverse performance requirements of in-vitro-diagnostic (IVD) devices. This level of customization ensures optimal performance in terms of the speed of RBC separation and the quality of the collected plasma. Our membranes are compatible with a wide range of IVD platforms, including quantitative and qualitative lateral flow point-of-care test kits, as well as instrument-based microfluidic devices.
Primecare™ Membrane Properties
- High separation efficiency per cm2, 60-70% of whole blood volume depending on hematocrit
- Customized coating solutions to reduce or eliminate RBC hemolysis
- Customized pore sizes and thickness to prevent RBC leakage or to simply slow RBC migration
- Separation time of ~ 60 seconds per cm2, depending on hematocrit and membrane characteristics (thickness and mean flow porosity)
- Membrane surfaces are inert and are resistant to protein binding
